The GED Preparation Classes have been operating in a remodeled classroom featuring 10 computers and workstations since August 2009. The SOS Center received a grant for the upstart of the GED Program from the Siebert Lutheran Foundation. Our program serves adults who are at a 5th grade or higher reading level. Students need to be at a 9th grade reading level in order to successfully participate in GED Preparation Classes. Students who are assessed between a 6th and 8th grade reading level begin at the Pre-GED level. Students at a 5th or 6th grade reading level receive additional help through our Basic Reading Program, all within our GED Preparation Program.
Our Format:
Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday thru Thursday, adults without a high school diploma can, FREE OF CHARGE, come and work at their own pace to prepare to take the GED Exam. Students must take a pre-assessment test that helps determine a student’s reading level. Upon successful completion of Pre-GED assessment, students can begin working toward their GED by completing GED level exercises and diagnostic testing. When a student demonstrates proficiency in all five subject areas (Math, Science, Reading, Social Studies and Writing) and begins to score at a 410 or higher on all tests, they are referred to MATC to schedule for the actual tests. To pass the exam and earn their GED a student must score a minimum of 410 on each test and have a cumulative score of 2250.
The Benefits:
Because of our unique partnership with MATC, any students who we refer and who successfully pass the GED are assisted with financial aid, registration and class planning to ease the enrollment and admission into the college so as to help insure their successful transition.
Our Qualifications:
GED Administrator/Instructor, Daniel Whitelaw holds a Doctorate Degree in Pastoral Ministry and has more than 20 years experience teaching and mentoring both youth and adults in the Milwaukee. GED Instructor, Nicole Gesch, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Mathematics with a minor in Secondary Education. She is licensed and certified for grades K-6 and grades 6-12 in Mathematics.
The Requirements:
To qualify for enrollment into the SOS Center GED Program, students must be at least 18 years old and provide proof of age. A brief registration form must be filled out and then GED preparation can begin. Interested students can call (414) 449-3470 for more information.
